Three years at CWM made me a real traditionalist, and I keep remembering Bob Parkinson saying, "I want the people to see what the circus used to be, not what it is today. That's what this site is about!

FROM JOHN HERRIOTT'S CIRCUS TRIVIA TREASURES

Here's another brain bender from Mr. Herriott, this one should really be interesting!!!! John,,,,,,,,I love it!

The almost human Gorilla parady has been a popular circus act. For the fun of see who can name at least five and who was the first one we can recall that was such a big hit with Ringling and spawned all the rest. Now, not just amateurs, but those that did it for a living.

Recall French fellow, Natal, as gorilla act with Ringling in 1940s or '50s. Other gorilla parodists may have included Norbu (Norbert Kreisch); (Charlie) Gutis Troupe; Tony Fossett; Klose Family; & recall seeing some Polish fellow in 1960s or '70s who did aerial act in an orangutan-type costume.

I can name the Guttis, who I believe were first, and Norbert Kreisch as Norbu which seems to be the act that set the pattern for most that followed.

I would just about bet a dollar to a doughnut who THAT Anonymous is.
The question had nothing to do with who was the best, or who made the most money.
I have this to say to a guy, who after years of retirement, continues to tell everyone how good he was. "If you want people to pat you on the back, get your hand out of the way"!!!!
It hardly ever gets mentioned that Norbert came to the USA, as a member of The Gutis Act.

Here is a quote from someone who was around in those days, Norbert did came over with the Gutis monkey act, it was not a gorrila or a pretty funny one that had a long tail and not a gorilla face but a monkey face.

Shane and Diana Hansen and Diana's son J.R. were doing a version at Western Playland (formerly Carson City) in the Catskills in 1998.

The Cassilino clowns did one on Cole Bros. in 2005. My son (who was 2 at the time) just kept yelling through the whole act, "Bad monkey! No! You STOP that, monkey! You are gonna get a time out." When we went back in 2006 he asked, "This isn't gonna have that bad monkey again, is it?"

I did one with the Dingbats baseball clowns at Perdue Stadium between innings of a Delmarva Shorebirds game in the summer of 2004.

Anonymous,
Not Real Bad, because I've never been afraid of losing or being wrong. Like I said ,it's not about who was best, or who made the most money. We all concede that Norbert was the best, & most successful, we just get tired of hearing it from him!!!!
By the way when I lose a bet, I always pay, who do I pay????

Here is a new one. The late great Con Colleano made famous the forward somersault on the wire. Certainly one of the most difficult feats in circus history. How many other great performers can you name that also accomplished this feat as part of their repetoire ?

By the way in response to the great number of comments on the preceeding, another showbiz quote, " 24 hour man thanks you, unohoo thanks you and down the road thanks you From the bottom of our--------, Oh hell I forgot the rest of it.

Re: Colleano's tight wire forward somersault, I recall seeing a young Spanish performer, Tonito, execute same on 1955 RBBB Circus. I think he (Antonio Paulo) may have been brother of featured heel-catching solo trapezist Miss Mara. I also think Karl Linares was able to complete forward on some occasions. -- Bill Hall
